She began playing the piano from the age of 4 and quickly showed an ability to play most anything by ear! By 12, she was singing, writing songs, and playing the piano for her church and knew that God was calling her to full-time music ministry.
As a teenager, Melissa began writing praise and worship songs for her church and youth group, where the passion for songwriting quickly took hold. It didn’t take long to set her sights on recording her own CDs of original work.
After graduating Bible College in 1993, Melissa moved to the far north of Sweden to be involved in missions work across Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula of northwest Russia.
During her time there, she was in a serious bicycle accident that resulted in total jaw reconstruction after many failed surgeries. While enduring these years of hardship, Melissa never lost sight of her calling to music, and continued writing new songs. Her first CD, “Be Still and Know,” was released in 1999. It is rich with songs of heartfelt worship, as well as encouragement for those who are also walking difficult roads.
In 2008, Melissa released her first instrumental CD just in time for Christmas. “Symphony of Joy” is a collection of fresh new arrangements of Christmas favorites, along with many original new works, all set to full symphony orchestra. One of the most beautiful parts about this album is that Melissa composed many of these songs while in the hospital and unable to sing. Truly, God gives some of His best gifts when we least expect them!
2015 brought the latest release, “Joy Rising,” with new songs that range from soulful black gospel and lush power ballads, all the way to tender songs of prayer. You’ll even find a few hymns with a fresh twist on this CD.
These days, Melissa is busy planning, writing and recording songs for not one, but two new CD projects! She is working on another project filled with her original work and modern renditions of the precious hymns that we all love.
After several years of recording and playing concerts with her phenomenally talented drummer, Randy Porshia, wedding bells rang in 2011 and the two were married! Melissa and Randy make their home in Myrtle Beach, SC.
